Careful what you ask for
Did we say we were ready for some changes? Holy cow, are we ever gonna have some. Our lease ends in August, and the landlady dropped a real bomb on us last night. I knew she’d want to raise the rent, but I wasn’t prepared for her expectations. Not fifty bucks, not one hundred bucks, but a whopping three hundred dollars! That’s not only completely out of our price range, it’s also just an absurd amount of money to pay for this apartment. Even if I had the means, on principle alone I would never pay that much. But it’s not about principles, it’s about our budget. So, we’re looking for a new place to live. Any leads would be most welcome!

You are not alone….My rent has been increased $250.00 since January and it seems each month is going to be a negotiation based on whatever the exchange rate is. It is more important now in Ukraine to have a good landlord/lady who is not greedy than a good apartment. My landlady is actually keeping it down as much as she can but still it is crunch time for those renting in Kyiv.

$250, yikes. We had the same problem with the fluctuating exchange rate. I finally told the landlady that I’m either paying the set rate in dollars or in hrivna, and I didn’t want to debate the amount every month. No real surprise that she picked hrivna, given the falling (collapsing?) dollar. So it meant our rent went up by about $60 since January.
You’re absolutely right about finding a good landlord. I’ve loved living here the past 3 years, but every month I dread seeing her to pay the rent. She’s never missed a chance to tell me how much more money she ought to be getting for this apartment. I wish her luck, though, and with this crazy housing market right now, she just might find somebody willing (and able) to pay an arm and a leg.
